The treatment experience

You'll speak with a Nurse about your background and medical history at your initial consultation. They will ensure that Fraxel treatment will fulfill your goals and may recommend that you undertake a course of topical retinoids to prepare your skin for the treatment.

At your designated Fraxel appointment, a local anaesthetic cream is applied and allowed to take affect for up to an hour. Then one of our RNs performs Fraxel on the chosen treatment area. The whole procedure takes 90 minutes.

It's best for

  • Overall rejuvenation of the face, neck, chest or arms.
  • Helping to remove age spots, sun spots, pigmentation, freckles or melasma.
  • Treating acne scarring.

"Fraxel changed my life. It completely cleared up my acne scarring and hyperpigmentation. It really worked for me."

- Gabriella, 33

Pre and post care

What can I expect after my treatment?

Recovery times for Fraxel vary from 2 days to 7 days. Immediately after your Fraxel session, your skin will feel sunburned and over the coming days will react as such.

Immediately after the treatment, you will experience redness, swelling and sometimes pinpoint bleeding. Heat sensation can be intense for the 2-3 hours following treatment.

Over the next few days, redness may worsen. Swelling may be significant and cause some discomfort. You may also notice little dark dots appearing on treated areas. This is dead skin as a result of laser treatment and should start sloughing off after 3-4 days. Once the sloughing is complete, you may notice some pinkness over the next few weeks. Pinkness indicates new skin cells, which need to be treated with care.

The real results from Fraxel become evident after 2 weeks when you will visibly notice dramatic improvements in skin tone and texture.

What precautions should I take pre and post?

Immediately after the treatment, we will provide you with specific post-treatment products for cleansing and moisturising.

Once sloughing starts, please allow your skin to heal and DO NOT scrub, rub, or use exfoliants. Keep clothing away from treated body parts as much as possible to avoid irritation.

During the first week of healing, keep treated area clean, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, avoid excessive exercise, perspiring, swimming, or exposing skin to heat and sun.

Once the sloughing is complete, you may resume your routine skin care and make-up products, as long as they are tolerable to you.

It is very important that you use sunscreen to prevent sun damage to the skin. Sunscreen with SPF 30 or above should be used daily once sloughing is complete (and everyday thereafter!) If you are under the sun for prolonged periods of time, sunscreen needs to be reapplied at least once every two hours. Your practice of diligent sunscreen use may lower the risk of laser-induced hyperpigmentation (darker colour).

Common questions

How does Fraxel work?

Fraxel is the trade name for fractional laser treatments, a non-invasive laser therapy that penetrates the epidermis, targeting the deep layers of the skin below for long lasting results. Fractional, because it delivers microscopic laser beams to treat a single column of skin at a time. The lasers mimic an injury to the skin, stimulating the body to go through its natural healing process, causing the existing collagen fibres to contract, and stimulating the production of new collagen, tissues and cells.

At The Clinic we use a Fraxel Re:Store Dual laser, which operates on two different wavelengths. The first wavelength is to treat superficial concerns such as pigmentation; the second wavelength tightens and rejuvenates the skin to repair more permanent damage or signs of ageing. With the Fraxel Re:Store Dual laser, treatment times are reduced by around 25% over other machines and your costs are ultimately lower, because the machine allows for single-nurse operation.

What are the benefits?
  • Dramatic improvement and repair in skin tone.
  • Softening of lines and wrinkles.
  • Reduction of damage caused by the sun or scarring.

When performed on the neck, Fraxel helps to reduce skin laxity. Many of our clients refer to it as "a non surgical neck lift".

When performed on the chest, Fraxel results in skin that looks and feel younger; crepey skin is reduced and sun damage and discolouration is repaired.

What are the risks?

Fraxel is clinically proven to be safe, and easily managed into your routine. There is very little risk of damage to the skin, however the skin does go through a natural healing process for which there can be short term side effects. These may include redness, swelling or peeling and subside within 2-5 days. We recommend allowing for some downtime during this process.

There is also a risk of pigment disruptions following Fraxel treatment for those with darker skin tones. We recommend SkinPen, Thermage or Dermal Fillers for your beauty goals if you have olive to dark skin tone.

Due to the laser technology used, Fraxel is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How many treatments will I need?

Most of our clients need only a single treatment to start seeing substantial changes in their skin.

Clinical evidence shows that a course of 3-5 Fraxel treatments, 6 weeks between each, is ideal for producing long-term improvement and long-lasting results.

Is it painful?

Without local anaesthesia, we would rate the pain of a Fraxel treatment at around 6/10. At The Clinic we use a topical anaesthetic cream which reduces the pain rating to around 3/10.

Whilst we have seen amazing results from Fraxel for a range of skin concerns, please know that results from Fraxel vary and we cannot make guarantees. We recommend coming and speaking to our registered nurses for an in-depth consultation. They will discuss in detail how Fraxel works, whether it will be right for your skin type and the expected results in line with your skin goals.
